THIS IS A BLACK CAP & GOWN. Freedom is a MATTE fabric.

Doctor gowns have velvet panels in front and three velvet sleeve bars on each side. Black velvet is the universal color of gown and velvet worn by most Doctors, including MD, PhD, EdD, DPT, DDS, JD, etc. though some wear degree color velvet.

Hoods are custom made. The Doctor Hood will have a five inch wide band of colored velvet denoting your field of study. Although there are some exceptions, PhDs wear Blue, the color of Philosophy, not the specific area of research or study.

ONLY terminal (Doctorate level) degree candidates and holders may wear a velvet tam...or a regular mortarboard cap...but the tams are cool...and comfortable. 

Doctors, especially PhDs, typically wear Black or Old Gold tassels, but you should check with your institution before ordering to be sure.
